Huntersville Issues

Roads, schools, parks and recreation, bike trails, taxes: what is important?

"I have talked with a lot of residents and the majority want one thing - A better quality of life! What does that encompass? Improved roads, better and closer schools, more park space for kids and adults, low crime rates and ease of moving around town. This is what has been told to me as important to the citizens of Huntersville and this is what needs to become a priority to the elected officials in Huntersville," says Sisson.

Roads - The major roads in Huntersville are state roads. I have worked with local staff as well as NCDOT to develop a relationship that allows us to attempt to get things done. What is the status of the most important roadway issues:

  • Widening of Sam Furr Rd - should begin in early 2008
  • repaving of US21 - should be complete by the end of summer
  • Improvements to Gilead and Hwy 21 - This needs to start in 2008
  • Hwy 115 at Ramah Church - improvements are on the way
  • The list keeps growing and we will keep working on it! "It is time for the elected officials to make transportation our number one priority!"

Schools - It is time for the elected officials in Huntersville (and Cornelius) to start to explore other opportunities for our children in Huntersville - local control and local schools! We have let CMS run the schools and they have shown they are not accountable to the citizens of Huntersville. It is time to bring control to the local level.

Parks and Recreation
- Canipe Park, Bradford Park, a new Gymnasium - we have been spending time utilizing the parks bonds and partnering with Mecklenburg County to add additional park space to the town of Huntersville.

Taxes and expenses - As we continue to grow, we will have to spend your money to deal with the growth. We need to do this in an efficient and responsible manner. I will continue to advocate for spending your money where it is needed, not where it is wanted. Sisson says, "We need to ensure that we are using the taxpayer money in an efficient manner, and putting our needs before our wants. Just like our citizens do with their personal budgets!"
